What is Sports Therapy?

"Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability."

(Society of Sports Therapy 2013)

What is the difference between Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy?

Sport Therapist train in clinics and sports clubs and generally have more exposure to these sporting environments at an undergraduate level, making them ideal for preventing sports injuries through specific strengthening  programmes.

Sports therapists are experts in musculoskeletal disorders, treating pain and injury through hands-on treatment and rehabilitation. Sports Therapists undergo an intensive three-year degree course which focuses on the musculoskeletal system and on restoring, maintaining and maximising movement to relieve pain and increase quality of life.

Physiotherapy has been around the longest. There are large subsections within the subject of Physiotherapy, namely muscular-skeletal, neurology and respiratory.

Physiotherapist train in hospitals and are mainly medical based. The role of the Physiotherapists is to help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice. They maintain health for people of all ages, helping patients to manage pain and prevent disease.

What is Sports Massage?

"Sports massage is a form of massage involving the manipulation of soft tissue to benefit a person engaged in regular physical activity. Soft tissue is connective tissue that has not hardened into bone and cartilage; it includes skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia (a form of connective tissue that lines and ensheathes the other soft tissues). Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma. The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury."

"The main reason I wear Phits orthotics is injury prevention. If my foot wasn't moving in the right way, that's the most important part of running, it affects the whole chain on the way up. If something's out of alignment, it really starts at your feet, so your orthotics have to really be exact...

...The gait analysis is a game changer. It makes a real difference knowing that my orthotics are specifically for me based on how I move, rather than just standing still on a box...

...Everything's got to be so finely tuned. Having the extra percent fitted precisely to your foot is definitely what you need. Now there's not a day I don't run in them!"

Dry Cupping & Needling

We also provide Dry Cupping and Needling Services here at TOTHS as part of our Sports Therapy Service. Read on to learn more about these treatment modalities to see which would be better for you. For more guidance and advise get in touch

Cupping

Dry Cupping

Dry Cupping pulls blood to a region to stimulate healing. It is effective at stretching tight fascia and muscles. Cupping helps the tissue develop new blood flow and stimulates the healing process. Cupping draws blood to the external capillaries and as a result minor bruising and circular cup marks may occur. These may last anything from a few hours to 10+ days. As the stagnation clears clients often start to feel the benefit of the treatment more

Dry Needling

Dry needling is used for musculoskeletal injuries and targets these through direct stimulation. Needling is used to target local points such as trigger points and knots. Dry needling uses a strong stimulation to help reduce muscular tightness and pain and usually gives a patient short term pain relief for 3-4 days. There are many other benefits to dry needling and this tends to be used as an adjunct to Sports Therapy treatment modalities
